The Authentic Self

The authentic self is the self that is original but what does that mean? Rather what does that look like? First we have to explore the word authentic, the term “Authentic” can be used ether in a strong sense as in “the undisputed origin or authorship” or in the weak sense “faithful to the original” or as in “[a] reliable accurate representation”. As a noun it describes something that is “real and true”. So, we can say in broad senesce the authentic self is the self that is true and original, authored by the individual and in accordance with said individuals’ values. Ergo go the authentic person is a person that is true to one’s own values not other people. While other people may share your values, the idea is that the authentic self is the authentic self that is uncorrupted by popular opinion or social pressures. Is a person that has self-authorship and is in control of themselves.

To say something is authentic is to say that it is what it professes to be, it is how it appears in other words, as in is not fake. The distinction between authentic and what is derivative is hard a distinction to recognize. When discussing it as a characteristic attribute to a human being, for this we need to ask what is it to be at one with oneself?  There are three parts to the self the ID, Ego and the Superego in my opinion. The ID is the baser instincts the Superego is the higher self the values one holds, and the Ego is what comes out the battel between the ID and Superego ergo the Ego is reason and emotional part as Nietzsche put it to reason is impulsive. In order to know oneself one has to question oneself, ones actions and ones deeds, it is only in that conversation of self-authorship that a truly authentic self can manifest. So long as one is true to the argument the reason what comes out of being authentic will be of a higher value than being a slave to passions, the ID or even social pressures.

Yet through we have not answered the question of Derivative VS Authentic to look at the we have to ask what is derivative? If something is derivative it is not the result of a new idea but has been developed from copies of something else “his work is derivative”. However, I feel it is possible that core values such as hard work, dedication, honesty while being derivative may still be characteristic of an authentic self so long as that is in the same sense as higher values. For being oneself is ultimately inescapable for whenever one acts or makes a choice it is oneself that is doing this, hence the importance of self-authorship, self-reflection for all you know one may act in breach of higher values and not be aware of it, one may hold contradictory view if one’s thoughts go unexamined. I myself often act contrary to my higher values  something I’m working making better.

Self-authoring is an internal monolog a process of self-evaluation instead of depending on external forces to form  such as values, beliefs and interpersonal loyalties. Instead Self-authoring depends on the internal generation and coordination of one’s beliefs, values and internal loyalties. It is process of adult learning involving the gaining of knowledge of the self, the concept of the self and the concept of the object make up self-authorship. One is not born with self-authorship it is something obtained by working at it. Through it or through the process of self-authorship, it allows you to look at the world around you and develop your own opinion out with the pressures of social convention. The pressures to conform are always all around it is up to the individual to make for themselves free thought and subsequently for other a free society.

The aesthetic of the authentic self is then something that is in appearance and at its core something real, true and original. Someone that has formed there own opinion on any given subject. Someone that is seen to be true to there own internal set of values, that may or may not be congruent with social acceptance. In fact such an authentic self would indeed be nuanced and not akin to an ideologue aka someone derivative and unthinking.
